Meet Oral Surgeon, Dr. RICHARD M. Oakley
Dr. Richard Oakley is a native of Kansas. He received his undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Oklahoma in 1984. He then attended the University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry where he served as President of his class and received the distinction of Outstanding Senior Student in Oral Surgery. He received his dental degree in 1989. Dr. Oakley entered his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City following his graduation from dental school and completed his surgical training in 1993. He moved to Kansas City immediately after completing his residency and joined the oral and maxillofacial surgery practice started by Dr. TJ Nidiffer. While Dr. Oakley has been practicing for over 27 years, Oakley Oral Surgery will celebrate it’s 28th year in 2022.

Dr. Oakley is Board Certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is a member of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American College of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Association, the Kansas Dental Association and the American Dental Society of Anesthesiologists. He currently is on the medical staff at Shawnee Mission Medical Center where he has chaired various medical staff committees. He also has staff appointments at Overland Park Regional Medical Center (for facial trauma) and at Saint Luke’s South Hospital in Overland Park.
Dr. Oakley is the director of the Great Plains Study Club (now in its 25th year), the exclusive local Kansas City chapter of the Seattle Study Club. The Seattle Study Club stresses interdisciplinary dentistry (multiple dental specialists working with the patient’s general dentist to obtain the best outcome for the patient) and obtaining absolute excellence in the doctor’s professional practice. A dentist in the Seattle Study Club emphasizes the importance of providing the very best, most comprehensive treatment available. As director of the Great Plains Study Club, Dr. Oakley instructs some of Kansas City’s finest dentists on oral implants.
With over 30 years of experience, Dr. Oakley has developed a special interest in the area of dental implants, bone grafting techniques to augment the jaws to better accept dental implants, and reconstruction of traumatic facial injuries. He is married and has one daughter and one son. Dr. Oakley enjoys road cycling, hiking in the mountains, snow skiing and music.
